At the centre of the park is Vicar Pond, a fishing lake which during the early 1900's was used for bathing and boating by both local people and soldiers from a nearby army camp. Since the 1920's the landscape has undergone dramatic changes due to the development of Clipstone Colliery. The reclamation of the colliery's spoil heaps began in 1976. The former tranquillity and beauty of the area has now been regained and the park offers a wealth of wildlife to discover and a range of interesting and valuable habitats,
such as grassland, heathland and woodland.Recent developments mean that the park now offers a choice of stimulating walks and cycle routes suitable for all abilities. Free guides providing more detailed information on the park's terrain and waymarked trails can be obtained from the Visitor Centre.
